Exhibition 2013 ~
WHAT IS EXHIBITION?
I'm glad you asked! Exhibition is one night every year that replaces standard finals from public schools and displays work that we have been working for a long period of time! It is where everyone from the community, including friends, family, and enthusiasts can come and enjoy all of the kids work. It is a very friendly and informative environment where everyone can learn about what we have been doing!
WHAT WAS OUR EXHIBITION THIS YEAR?
I'm so glad you are all so curious! We did a project called In Sickness and In Health. It was a project that had us look at different diseases in our families and do further research to see what causes it within the organs and molecular cells. We got to also find preventative measures to avoid the specific disease. If you want to find out more check out this page!
Tour of the Exhibition:Hello! Welcome. I will let you know about all of the projects we did through out the whole 3 month process! The main take aways and project essentials are to be a master about every project that we completed in each class. This consists of ; Pieces of me, Knowledge of life, Creative commissions, Oral History, In Sickness and In Health Disease Profile Paintings, Life maps, Dissection mounts, Health plan for the book, and the healthcare infographics. The goal is to memorize the purpose and process of each one of these projects and describe different examples as well as possible. I can give brief descriptions of each. The Pieces of me was an art project that we were assigned that we had to photoshop two pictures into one, including at least one part that displays ourselves and one symbol to represent how we are as a student in any school subject. The knowledge of life was propaganda-like posters that display our views on healthcare that also tied into our categories. We blew 4 of them up and are painted beautifully that will be displayed outside in the front of our classroom on exhibition night. The creative commissions are pieces that displayed information that was pulled from interviews with scientists. The purpose was to represent their current research or findings in the past through artwork. There were 8 that were blown up, mine included. Oral history is the project that consisted of interviews with one or more of our family member(s) that has suffered with or lost their life to a certain disease that runs in the family. This project connected with biology because the interview was about how the disease affected their families.
The In sickness and in health disease profile was our group art piece that represented the disease that we all chose to research. It represented preventative measures and what was involved in the disease. The life maps were maps of our life, and our health level until a certain age that were affected by certain life events. For example, my health may have gone down from a 7 to a 4 because I broke my leg and could not exercise for a year. The dissection mounts were simply an option for students who wanted to display certain parts of the pig dissections that we completed or the sheep brain we also dissected earlier in the semester. The health plan was a month long project that we had to follow a certain health plan including physical activity, dietary changes and mental exercises. We had to reflect every week and fill out a log. We also set goals for ourselves in the beginning of the semester and reflected on how we achieved them after the health plan was over. This was all written up by students, which is later being put into a book. The healthcare infographics was our math project for this exhibition and what we did was we had to research health care from the perspectives of ; individuals, doctors, employers, government, etc. We had to add multiple statistics so it was an informational poster about health care. Some excellent examples are; Pieces of me done by Malia Trist that showed herself, painted very well, with a tire in the background representing her love for working on and riding dirt bikes. An amazing Knowledge is life poster was done by Gabrielle Gastelo and Maddy Davison that were inspired by 1920’s artists Toulouse Lautrec and Leonetto Cappiello. The creative commissions that was done is Erina Chavez’ which is very vibrant with a magnifying glass made out of dollar blils and coins that is magnifying two nuerons, one good (blue), and one bad (red). The background is made out of money to represent the cost of research is very large.
I did a lot of things differently than other people, but the main things I did was I wrote a 12 page health plan with very in depth reflections, represented my commission art piece in a good way enough to get it enlarged onto a larger canvas, made an oral history that was cleared by the people who checked them saying it was “in the top ten” and more. I did both a life map and a dissection mount of the sheep brain which was an extra option, which I chose to do. I really put my time and effort into each part of this project and I think my determination really paid off and was represented by the grades I recieved. I learned so much throughout all of these projects. I learned iMovie skills, interview skills, painting skills, all about cardiovascular disease, more about my family. I learned about all of the different projects and enough to know about everyone’s individual work and my own as well.
EXHIBITION REFLECTION :
The moment that summed up the exhibition for me, was when I got to talk to another student’s father for a long time in the biology room. He was extremely excited to be talking about cardiovascular disease. I think the reason why this moment summed it all up is because the point of exhibition is to exhibit our work to the public and teach them something. But at the same time I think it is an equal opportunity for us to learn more. We can never have too much information or know everything about a topic. I really enjoyed talking to him and we both shared our personal experiences with the disease. It was really awesome to hear the information that he had to share and he had a really awesome piece of information that I used for the rest of the night. He also used personal connections and told me that his Grandfather was one of the original founders of webMD. I thought it was a really cool piece of information and a really awesome story of how it started. I really loved that moment and that is what makes exhibition worth it to me. Well not only did I help set up the exhibition but I also did a lot during exhibition. For the set up I was all over the place. I helped do the sales of the T-shirts. I went around to every individual, asked for their size and for $7 dollar donation. I also emailed everyone everyday reminding them about the shirts. We raised over 200 dollars so I think it was a big success. Then I emailed everyone about the Mitchell Thorp Foundation and gave all the information about the foundation. After that I did a lot of odd jobs. I was the financial manager and I ended up doing most of the materials manager’s job as well. I helped Mrs. Shani bring a lot of the display cases upstairs that we used to display the pieces of me project. I also helped hang up all of the group art pieces which took a really long time. During exhibition I helped out and gave information about our math infographic. I was specifically asked by Mr. Hensley so I actually felt honored. Then I was the Cardiovascular disease master so I gave all the info about the disease.
I think my creative commision piece that was enlarged was my biggest accomplishment. I have never been good at painting or art, so for my piece to be put up on the wall, I was really proud. I really worked hard on the painting with help from another student that encouraged me along the way. I was really proud because I did not think it was going to be finished in time for exhibition but we pulled it off. I was so excited to see it above the classroom and completed. I was also very proud of the one pager because it showed me that I really knew what I was talking about. I was able to critique and add onto the page with ease which really made me happy and I felt like I truly knew the material.
There were not too many lessons that I learned from exhibition. The only thing was to stay on top of your work and always be doing something. Do not just sit around during exhibition week because the teachers will get ma and you are no help. An extra person doing nothing is just extra weight. If you don't have something to do find something or just get out of the classroom so you can let the people that are working, work. I also learned to always have a back up plan. That is a really important lesson for the future. In many situations you're going to need a back up plan and I learned that it is extremely important during this project. I emailed scientists for 3 months and got no response. I finally went with my back up plan and it worked out really well so I am very glad I had a back up plan.

This picture jut shows me standing in one of my rotations. This was during a run through when we were practicing the day of exhibition. I was standing by the poster you see in the picture that was actually my work. I had taken information about cardiovascular disease and created a one page paper that informed the average reader about the disease. This run through was extremely important and beneficial. This was the conner of the first room that was surrounded by the group art pieces we all created to show preventative measures for all of our disease groups.
Creative Commission:
The top painting is mine. It is a creative commission that represents my scientist's work. If you would like to read more about my scientist, a document will be attached below. This is a piece that was displayed right outside of the room as you walk into exhibition. This was exciting for me because I was one of the 8 different people whose art was chosen to be put onto a larger canvas. This was a big piece of work that we had to do and complete so I was excited when I got the opportunity to display this piece at exhibition.
Pieces of Me Project:
This is the pieces of me project. This was displayed on the left wall as you walked into the exhibition. It was a piece of art that was supposed to represent yourself as an individual and a student. For me I chose to put myself meditating because it incorporates biology and the fact that I love to enjoy life and slow down. I really enjoy relaxation and the beach so it does represent my personality.
Group Art Piece:
This is an amazing group piece. The design was done by the whole group and the painting and sketch was done by Reece Freeman. The purpose of this project was to represent preventative measures that can be taken to avoid, in my case, cardiovascular disease. The painting represents that smoking will kill the heart and that avoiding smoking is only beneficial to ones health. Cigarettes also play a large role in cardiovascular disease. This was right next to my one pager that was blown up next to me.
Oral History Video: This is my oral history video! It was so much fun to make! The best part was that I got to find out a lot of information about my uncle that I didn't know before. It was cool but scary at the same time. You can see why it was a touching story by watching the video! Enjoy.
