Biology Life Thoughts
Overview: Everyday when we come into Mr. Leader's 11th grade biology class, he has a question on the board that makes you truly
think deeply about biology. It always serves a purpose, usually relating to what we learn about that day or week. It is truly refreshing to come into class and be able to have to really use your brain and think about what you are learning about.
Life Thought 12/2/13:
Q:How easily do you digest the different foods that you eat? Give examples. Is there some that you feel don't "sit" well? Has this changed with your health plan?
A: I digest some foods well but others do not sit well with me at all. Gluten and sugar do not sit well with me. When I eat wheat I itch my skin which flares up my eczema. This has not really changed with my health plan because just by exercising will not abolish my allergy to it.
Life Thought 12/3/14:
Q: How do you think the health of your circulatory system is right now compared to 1 month ago. Give a detail (educated guess) of at least one specific change.
A: I think it is a little worse. Because I have been exercising and skating everyday, I have needed my inhaler more often than usual. One specific change is that I need my inhaler even when I yawn because I have lost breath so much while exercising.
Life Thought 11/12/13:
Q: What is one drug that has benefitted you (and how) and one drug that has impacted you negatively (and how; perhaps just in the way that you live)?
A: Albuteral that comes in inhalers. I have used inhalers for all my life and they have saved me on countless occasions. However this drug scars lungs every time it is inhaled so at the same time it is saving my life, it is also damaging my lungs with a long term effect. I have also become reliant on it so that is bad as well.
Life Thought 11/1/14:
Q:
What response have you gotten from the researcher so far and what do you expect the art commission to be like?
A:
I have not yet received a response from my scientist with the answers to my questions, However I expect the art piece to have something to do with the heart or the lungs. I want the background to be colorful and designed like the inside of a lung to represent my scientists work.
Life Thought 10/14/13:
Q: What makes a good lesson?
A: There is a lot that goes into a good lesson. I think that eye contact, voice projection and good content are all necessary components of a good lesson. You want to catch people's attention and keep their attention with interesting yet informative information. I also think a good clean presentation with very few words on each slide. Preparation is the final and most important thing. If someone is not prepared, the presentation will not go well.
Life Thought 10/7/13:
Q: What disease do you plan to profile? Please give specific reasons as to why.
A: I plan to profile cardiovascular disease because it is relevant within my family. My uncle has had 3 heart attacks that should have been mrs serious than they were. I also am afraid of a failing heart mostly because of my current health I want to know how to prevent this so I can help my kids and myself for when I grow up.
Life Thought 10/8/14:
Q: What do you hope to share about the disease you are researching during your lesson? What are your presentation strengths?
A: I hope to share how to prevent it and why it happens. With this information kids will know what not to do and how it happens so they can prevent it for themselves. I think that my presentation strengths are Preparedness, Eye contact, voice projection, knowledge of content and bring humor into serious situations when appropriate.
Life Thought 10/3/14
Q: What do you think will be different from dissecting the fetal pig and how a med student walks through the analysis of a cadaver?
A: I think that it will be much different. Although pigs and humans are very similar with the body systems, it is more serious with a cadaver. However I think that many of the cuts will be similar and what is inside will be similar as well. The med student also has to be much more careful since if they mess up they cannot just get another human. Pigs are easy to get if you mess up a cut.
Life Thought 9/23/13:
Q:How do you plan to understand jargon? If you don't know what jargon means than answer the question, "How do you plan to understand vocabulary and abstract topics in science that you don't know about?"
A: I plan to understand it in two ways. The first being in context. If I have learned anything from tests and the SAT, is if I do not know the meaning of the word I try to think about it in context. With the context I can try and find synonyms that would fit as well and try to figure out the definition that way.
Life Thought 9/4/13:
Q: What makes water so essential to life on earth?
A: Well Earth is made up of 70% water. It also holds some of the most important sea life on earth. We get fish front he water, which is a big dietary supplement for many countries over the world. It also is necessary for all of us to live, to make plants grow, to give people jobs such as fishing, plumbing, etc. It is truly amazing how much water is used for and I do not take it for granted.
Life Thought 1/13/14 :Q:What is the difference between oceanography and marine biology? Why do we need to conduct research on ships?
A: There is a big difference between oceanography and marine biology. Oceanography is the study of everything to do with the ocean like how waves are formed and oil spill/ run off/ trash problems, etc. Marine biology is more focused on the ocean/ aquatic life like coral, fish, habits/ food chain. We need to conduct research on ships because we have to be in the setting to truly get the real effect.
Oceanography:
-Physical ocean (Floor, water, current, tides)
-Behavior (Chem)
-Math model, Computer programming
-Life.
Marine Biology:
-Life in aquatic environments
-Study of small (molecular cellular)
-Marine Ecology
Life Thought 1/15 :
Q: This is a test! List all of the native plants, fungi, protists and animals that you know (don't forget insects). Include all areas of San Diego County. Land, Air, Marine (Oceans, Lakes, Rivers).
A: King palm tree, California palm, Ants, Ladybugs, Mosquito, oak tree, Mountain Lions, Poppy, quail, Garibaldi, Seagull, Humans, Lavender, Seaweed, Birds of Paradise, Crows, Coyotes, Cougars, cactus.
Life Thought 1/17:
Q: What role or job would you like to have and see yourself doing on a research vessel (The RV Melville)?
A: If I were to be on the Melville, I would want to be the chef. I would want to be the chef because I would stay busy because the shifts always alternate. I would start by waking up in the morning and start preparing the breakfast. I would be cooking French toast with powdered sugar and four strips of bacon for each crew member. Then I would give them each a tall glass of milk and water because they need to stay hydrated. Then for the next shift it would be time to prepare dinner. I would make baked/panfried/smoked salmon (just to be in the spirit of things). I would serve it with asparagus and lemon and mashed potatoes. Then I would clean my station and sleep.
Life Thought 1/21:
Q: How can we understand and educate kindergartners about the SD watershed (riparian) life using our aquariums?
A: We can truly understand by visiting a watershed. I think the best way is to visit because we will be doing something. The kindergartners will stay occupied. Maybe make a coloring book for the kids as well.
Life Thought 1/27:
Q:What plants that you know of have medicinal properties and are used for healing purposes?
A: Guiyaki, Cannabis (helps people eat, sleep, relieves pain), Coca leaves (elevation sickness), Aloe Vera (helps heals burned skin), Agave (Sugar level), Rosemary, lavender, Mint (Anti-septic), Honey, Caffeine, cocoa, Tea.
Life Thought 1/29/14:
Q: Write as much as you can about the terms; Niche, Invasive, Trophic Levels.
A: Niche: An organism that lives in a certain area. An anima can be a niche such as a squirrel in a tree.
Invasive: When a plant, that is or isn't native , it spreads its roots all over and they expand to areas that don't have roots there.
Trophic Level: The trophic levels is the diversity level that an area has.
Life Thought 2/6/14:
Q: Most of us live within the Chaparrel Biome. We've also talked about the Coastal Sage Scrub Biome. List as many other Biome's as you can in the next couple minutes.
A: Salt marsh, Coastal sage scrub, Oak woodland, Riparian, Desert, Coniferous Mountains, Tundra, Grassland, Forest, Marine.
Life Thought 2/10/14:
Q: What life is found at the mouth of a river and the surrounding beach? Why is a wetland key to water quality in the ocean surrounding a river?
A: Mosquitos, Ducks, Bees, Small Fish, Salmon, Kelp, Carp, Mullet, Bull Sharks, Rays.
Salmon go from completely fresh water, to complete saltwater changes its physiology. They change how they breathe.
There is bass which takes four years to breed. They usually go to the mouth of the river to breed.
Life Thought 2/12/14:
Q: What is symbiosis?
A: Symbiosis is when two organisms benefit each other in some way while interacting. When 2 species living together, excluding familial and sexual relationships. There are 3 different types; Commensalism, Parasitism and Mutualism. Commensalism is a when one species benefits and the other is not harmed. Parasitism is when one species benefits and the other is harmed. Mutualism is when both species benefit.
Life Thought 4/9/14:
Q: What are the steps to creating a video as outlined (mentioned) in the project sheet?
A: The first step is to make a story board of all the shots you want after that, you have to write a script. The main words have to correlate with with the images that show up on the screen. For example, if I did a video about plants, and I specifically said the Scarlet Monkey flower, then that image would have to be on the screen at that same moment. Then you have to put all the images into one project and voice over it all.
1. Anser the essential question
2. Research
3. Write a script
4. Make what to say in the video
5. Get all the pictures
6. Edit
7. Critique
